Road freight Turkey–Europe: full and part loads The cargo on the truck, the paperwork with us.
We plan and run international road freight from Türkiye to Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East, as full truckloads (FTL) and part loads (LTL). The CMR note, customs declaration, transit and delivery sit in one file, with one contact.

- Skopje · Petrich three times a week
Full and part loads
Fill the truck, or share it
If the cargo fills the truck it goes as a full load; if not, as a part load. Volume, weight and deadline decide, and we price both side by side.
On a full truckload (FTL) the vehicle runs straight from your loading point to the consignee. There is no transhipment on the way: the cargo is loaded once and unloaded once. We work with curtainside, reefer and mega trailers and pick the trailer type to suit the cargo.
A part load (LTL) travels in the same vehicle as other cargo heading the same way. Part loads leave on scheduled weekly departures; to Thessaloniki and Athens they join the daily departures, and to Skopje the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday departures. You pay only for the part of the truck you use; in return your cargo is handled alongside other shipments, and the quote says so plainly.
Full truckload
One loading, one unloading, no transhipment. Curtainside, reefer or mega trailer; door to door.
Part load
Scheduled weekly departures. Priced by weight, loading metre or volume; the conversion factor is written in the quote.
Distribution
From port and warehouse across Türkiye, including final delivery.
Dimensions
Legal dimensions of a full truck
The regulations set the vehicle's outer limits and maximum weight. How many pallets fit depends on the trailer's inside dimensions and on the cargo itself.
| Measure | Türkiye (KTY art. 128) | EU (96/53/EC) |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 2.55 m | 2.55 m |
| Width of a reefer body | 2.60 m | 2.60 m |
| Height | 4.00 m | 4.00 m |
| Length, articulated vehicle | 16.50 m | 16.50 m |
| Length, truck and trailer (road train) | 18.75 m | 18.75 m |
| Total weight, five or more axles | 40 t | 40 t |
| Three-axle tractor with two- or three-axle semi-trailer carrying containers | 44 t (40 ft ISO container) | 44 t (intermodal, up to 45 ft) |
Containers and removable bodies count within these dimensions (96/53/EC Annex I, 1.4). The Directive also sets a maximum of 12.00 m from the king-pin axis to the rear of the semi-trailer (Annex I, 1.6). In Türkiye an indivisible load that exceeds these limits may only travel with a special load permit from the General Directorate of Highways (KTY art. 128).
No regulation gives a pallet count. Inside length and width vary by trailer maker; pallet size, whether the pallets can be stacked and how the weight falls on the axles decide the answer. We draw up the loading plan from those details and write it in the quote with the trailer type.
Price
How a part load is priced
A part load is priced on its weight or on the space it takes in the truck. Which of the two applies is set by the carrier's tariff.
The loading metre (LDM) is the length of trailer floor the cargo occupies. Small, heavy cargo is billed by the kilogram; light, bulky cargo by loading metre or cubic metre. The chargeable weight is the greater of gross weight and volumetric weight.
The factor that turns cubic metres or loading metres into kilograms does not come from any regulation and differs from carrier to carrier. So the quote states which factor was used. The calculation in full is on the CBM, LDM and chargeable weight page.
What a quote needs
Pallet or carton size, count, gross weight, whether it can be stacked, loading and delivery address.
In writing
The kg/m³ and kg/LDM values used are written plainly in the quote.
No surprises
Nothing is charged beyond what the quote says.
CMR
The CMR note and liability
When the places of taking over and delivery are in two different countries and at least one of them is a contracting party, carriage of goods by road for reward falls under the CMR Convention (art. 1).
The contract of carriage is confirmed by a CMR consignment note. The note is made out in three originals: one for the sender, one travelling with the goods, one kept by the carrier (art. 5). A missing or irregular note does not affect the validity of the contract (art. 4). The carrier is liable for loss, damage and delay from the moment it takes over the goods until delivery (art. 17).
Compensation is capped at 8.33 units of account, meaning Special Drawing Rights, per kilogram of gross weight short. That figure came in with the 1978 Protocol, to which Türkiye, Greece and North Macedonia are parties. If the goods are worth more, a higher declared value (art. 24) or a special interest in delivery (art. 26) can be entered on the note against a surcharge; for most cargo, cargo insurance is the simpler route. How to write a reservation is on the CMR reservations page, and the mode-by-mode comparison on carrier liability limits.
Apparent damage
Reservations no later than delivery; otherwise the goods count as received in the condition stated on the note (art. 30/1).
Hidden damage
In writing within seven days of delivery, Sundays and public holidays excepted (art. 30/1).
Delay
A written reservation within twenty-one days of the goods being placed at the consignee's disposal (art. 30/3).
Time bar
Three years in the case of wilful misconduct or equivalent default (art. 32/1).
Documents
Road permits and transit
A Turkish truck bound for Europe travels on two separate authorisations: the vehicle's permit to enter a country, and the cargo's duty-suspended transit procedure.
A Turkish-registered vehicle enters destination and transit countries with permits obtained under bilateral agreements or with a multilateral ECMT licence (UBAK in Türkiye). Permits are subject to quotas and are distributed through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. Which permit a route needs is set out on the road permits and ECMT page.
Türkiye has been a party to common transit since 1 December 2012, and North Macedonia since 1 July 2015. Under a T1 transit declaration the goods travel to the office of destination with import duties, taxes and trade policy measures suspended; the declaration is lodged in the electronic NCTS system. In detail: T1 transit and NCTS.
Our own customs broker prepares the export declaration, the T1 transit declaration and movement certificates such as A.TR and EUR.1; the file is not handed to anyone outside. For Middle East lanes we also prepare the border-crossing paperwork.
Bilateral and ECMT
By destination and transit country; quota-based.
T1 · NCTS
Duties suspended as far as the office of destination.
In-house
Declaration, T1 and movement certificates in the same team.
Safety
Cargo securing and dangerous goods
Checks happen on the road. Poorly secured or under-declared cargo keeps a truck waiting at the border or by the roadside.
In EU roadside inspections, cargo securing must withstand 0.8 times the weight of the cargo in the driving direction and 0.5 times sideways and backwards, and must prevent the cargo from tipping (Directive 2014/47, Annex III). We draw up the loading plan with you to that standard. The Turkish rules and penalties are on the road cargo securing page.
Dangerous goods by road fall under ADR. Türkiye acceded to ADR on 22 February 2010; Greece and North Macedonia are parties too. In Türkiye the Regulation on the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road also gives separate duties to the consignor, packer, loader and carrier. If your cargo is dangerous goods, include the UN number and the safety data sheet in your quote request; the rules are on the dangerous goods rules page.
Driving direction
The force cargo securing must hold, as a multiple of the cargo's weight.
Sideways and backwards
Same measure; tipping must also be prevented.
Dangerous goods
Türkiye a party since 2010. UN number and safety data sheet with the quote request.
Balkans
Departure days to the Balkans
Trucks leave İstanbul for Thessaloniki and Athens every day, and for Skopje and Petrich on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
In Thessaloniki, Athens and Skopje our correspondent agents receive the cargo on arrival. They handle the far end, not our own team, and we say so from the start. In Athens and Thessaloniki we work with 3,000 m² of storage capacity in total. The same network reaches more than 30 European countries.
Lane details: Türkiye–Greece road freight and Türkiye–North Macedonia road freight. The agents' addresses are on the contact page.
Thessaloniki

Warehouse and customs
Before and after the truck
Before it leaves, the cargo is gathered in one place and declared in another. We run both in the same file.
Our warehouse is on İstanbul's western side, in Mimarsinan, Büyükçekmece: 2,000 m² under cover. Cargo is gathered, sorted, labelled and, where needed, repacked there; goods are received and released by appointment.
Customs brokerage is in-house: declarations, HS classification, origin and movement certificates are prepared in the same team. More in the customs and warehousing section of the services page; all five transport modes are summarised on the services page.

Frequently asked
How many pallets fit on a full truck, and what are its dimensions?
The regulations give no pallet count; they set the vehicle's outer limits: width 2.55 m, height 4.00 m, total length of an articulated vehicle 16.50 m, total weight 40 t with five or more axles (KTY art. 128; in the EU, 96/53/EC). How many pallets fit depends on the trailer's inside dimensions, the pallet size and whether they can be stacked; we give the loading plan with the quote.
Should I ship a full load or a part load?
If the cargo fills most of the truck, or you want no transhipment, a full load; a few pallets, a part load. Part loads leave on scheduled weekly departures and you pay only for the space you use. We can put both options side by side in the same quote.
How is a part load priced?
By weight, loading metre (LDM) or volume; the chargeable weight is the greater of gross weight and volumetric weight. The factor that converts volume into kilograms is not universal, so the quote states which value was used.
How much does CMR cover for damage?
The carrier's compensation is capped at 8.33 Special Drawing Rights per kilogram of gross weight short (CMR art. 23/3, 1978 Protocol). For valuable cargo that cap may not cover the value of the goods; a higher declared value on the note or cargo insurance is needed.
Which documents does a truck to Europe travel with?
For the cargo: the CMR consignment note, the export declaration, a T1 transit declaration where needed and a movement certificate such as A.TR or EUR.1; for the vehicle: a bilateral permit or an ECMT licence, depending on the destination and transit countries. Our own customs broker prepares the customs paperwork.
What should I declare when shipping dangerous goods?
Say in your quote request that the cargo is dangerous goods, and give the UN number and the safety data sheet. ADR applies by road; in Türkiye the Regulation on the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road also places duties on the consignor.
